— 1866, primer año de la era Keiō, aunque la gente se pregunta si no será también el ultimo. Muzan Kibutsuji, el Amo de la Noche, Rey de los Demonios, ha formado un ejército de criaturas voraces que le sirven a él y solo a él, extendiéndose por Japón. Más rápidos, fuertes y virtualmente inmortales, han reclamado el trono de la cadena alimenticia. ¿Su único defecto? No toleran la luz del sol. Es responsabilidad del Cuerpo de Cazadores, una organización secreta, combatirlos en las sombras.

Por si la amenaza oculta de los demonios fuera poco, el país parece precipitarse con rapidez a una guerra civil entre los nobles y samuráis leales al Shogun y aquellos que siguen al Emperador. Un nuevo Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshitsune, Señor de Mito, ha sido elegido recientemente para llevar las riendas del país nipón. Joven, competente y de carácter de hierro, solo el tiempo dirá si podrá salvar al Imperio.
